Inside every ABB UNITROL F or DCS800 DC drive sits a three-phase rectifier bridge. If even one of those diodes opens, shorts, or drifts out of balance, the ripple current skyrockets, the motor vibrates, and the whole line can go down. The UNS0864B-P V1 is a 90 × 130 mm “watchdog” that sits on the DC bus and stares at every diode 24/7. The moment it sees an anomaly it fires a relay, the drive trips cleanly, and you swap a £20 diode instead of a £20 000 thyristor stack.
The board measures micro-voltage differences between the positive and negative buses (or across external shunts). A built-in DSP compares the instantaneous pattern with a “healthy” template stored in flash. Open diode = missing pulse; short = extra pulse; imbalance = asymmetrical ripple. Detection time is < 2 ms, fast enough to beat the I²t curve of the slowest semiconductor fuse. One isolated relay (SPDT, 250 VAC / 5 A) gives you a choice: fail-safe trip or alarm-only mode.
Mounting is old-school but bullet-proof: four M4 screws on the same DIN plate ABB has used since the 1990s. The 24 VDC logic feed comes straight from the drive’s own PSU (18–30 V range), so you’re not hunting for wall-warts. Wire the bus taps, set the DIP switch for N.O. or N.C. contacts, snap on the 20-pole connector, and you’re done. LED turns green = healthy, red = fault, flashing = wiring error. Total draw is < 3 W—less than a night-light.
Sweden-built, IP20 for cabinet use, −25 °C to +70 °C operating, −40 °C to +85 °C storage. 5–95 % RH non-condensing, 2 g vibration, 25 g shock. CE, UL, IEC 61131-2 compliant. Mean time between failures (MTBF) > 300 000 h at 40 °C, so once it’s in you can forget it’s there—until it saves you.
Steel mill leveller: one diode failure used to mean 4 h downtime, 200 t of scrapped coil. With the UNS0864B-P V1 the drive trips at the first imbalance; maintenance swaps the diode during the next scheduled roll change. ROI < 30 days.
